Awards and Grants Offered by AZAA

As a professional organization, Arizona Archives Alliance is devoted to improving the training, career opportunities, and professional development of archivists in Arizona. As a promoter of archives, AZAA encourages researchers to visit and work at Arizona’s historical archives. To further those aims, AZAA sponsors several awards and grants.

AZAA Award for Excellence in Archival Research

Each year, AZAA sponsors this $250 paper prize at the Arizona History Convention. It is awarded to the paper that best demonstrates the use of archival research, preferably with multiple collections from more than one archival repository. The deadline for prize applications varies from year to year, but typically it is in the October preceding the conference. For more information, click here.

Jo Ann Day Freeman Scholarships

To support the professional development of Arizona’s archivists, AZAA offers $200 convention travel scholarships to young archivists and students who are preparing to become archivists. Two scholarships are awarded each year for travel to professional conferences and workshops held in Arizona. Applications are accepted each year starting on January 1, and the scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

National History Day Research Stipends

Each year AZAA offers two stipends of up to $250 each to pay for travel costs incurred while doing research for National History Day projects. Applications are to be submitted by the teachers overseeing the research projects or, for home-schooled students, by their parents. The application deadline is November 1 and the stipend winners are announced by the end of the year.
